On the campus of the University of Alaska Fairbanks (UAF) you can find a unique group of young people that consider pursuing a higher education a priority. What makes them unique; they serve as full time student firefighters for the UAF Fire Department while attending.
The program has roots dating back to the early 1950's and has continued to produce the most sought after firefighters in Alaska and across the United States. The UAF program not only provides an education for its members, but students will graduate with basic certifications such as EMT-B and Firefighter I. UAFD also creates opportunities for students to acquire other fire service certifications such as Hazardous Materials, Firefighter II, Paramedic, etc.
The IAFF currently represents the officers of this program and we find that many of these students graduate and find placement in IAFF career fire departments everywhere. The AKPFFA not only endorses this program, but encourages our IAFF members to highly consider this program for the young people we see everyday that express interest in a career in the fire service. You can find more info regarding this program at http://www.uaf.edu/fire/about/.
We have also provided an overview of the recent recruitment on our website under the tab IAFF job postings above.
